DAY SHAPE CYLINDER BLACK 24″ X48″
Day signals or day shapes are masthead signals that visually indicate the status of a vessel to other vessels on navigable waters during daylight hours, whether underway, anchored or aground.
These signals consist of a set of simple geometric shapes – ball, cylinder, cone and diamond – which are displayed, suspended from a mast, in a prescribed manner to indicate a vessel’s operational status; some of these signals may be somewhat complex1.
The meaning of the shapes is defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (RIPAM).
RIPAM day signals
Day signals are black in color and their sizes are determined by RIPAM; for example, the size of the ball is not less than 0.6 meters (1.96850394 ft).

The vertical distance between shapes is at least 1.5 meters (4.92125985 ft). Ships less than 20 meters (65.616798 ft) long may use smaller shapes proportional to the size of the ship2.
Both standard and reduced size day signals are commercially available.
Day shapes are usually constructed from a lightweight fabric-covered frame and are designed to be foldable for easy storage.
• Fully collapsible when stored
• Simplicity of design offers rapid and
rigid display when required
