Atlantic mackerel

The mackerel (Scomber scombrus), blue mackerel or Atlantic mackerel is a species of pelagic fish from the open sea that is appreciated for its meat. It is a migratory fish that lives in cold waters during the summer before leaving for warmer waters in the fall.

It lives in schools and feeds mainly on zooplankton. However, during its reproduction period, from March to July, it becomes a predator. It hunts small fish such as fish larvae, as well as mollusks and small crustaceans. Its main predators are dolphins, tuna, and of course humans. Mackerel is an excellent fish to learn how to fish. In fact, under certain circumstances, schools of mackerel literally throw themselves on Fipec fishing rods equipped with mackerel jigger.

Consumption

Mackerel is a fish available almost all year round, abundant and cheap. Its flesh is fragile and should be eaten quickly after purchase. It is a fatty fish, like tuna, herring or salmon. However, its fat content varies significantly depending on the time of year. Its caloric content ranges from 190 to 262 kcal per 100 g. There is nothing better than catching your own fresh mackerel with the mackerel lure 35g green/red.

It is mainly cooked grilled, for example on the barbecue, often with mustard. Canned, like sardines (in oil, tomato, etc.). Blue mackerel is coveted for its meat, and is eaten fresh, frozen, smoked or salted. In Canada, it is fished commercially from the Bay of Fundy to Labrador, mainly with purse seines, but also with weirs and trap nets. Mackerel are also sought after by anglers.
