Navigation lights must be turned on if you are operating a boat at night or in poor visibility. The term “night” here refers to the period between sunset and sunrise. During the day, poor visibility may be caused by thick fog or even adverse weather conditions, such as rain or snowfall.
When navigating at night, boats must make themselves visible with lights specific to each type of boat in order to be identified by others. It is therefore possible to know if it is a sailing boat, a motor boat or a boat at anchor. Larger vessels, fishing boats and tugs pulling barges have additional lights to help identify the type of vessel.
The color of the light seen on the other vessel encountered helps determine which one has priority. To do this, it is important to know the different lights and how to interpret them.
