SOUWESTER HAT BLACK

Our authentic Sou’Westers are made from high-quality cotton canvas treated with polyurethane to withstand the elements. They feature an elongated brim at the back to prevent water from running down the neck and into clothing, ear flaps and a flannel lining for added warmth. Also known as a fisherman’s hat. Our Sou’Westers are proudly designed in Canada and are still used by many local fishermen, carrying on a tradition that dates back to the 19th century.

The black Sou’Wester was developed in the 1800’s. Originally coated with linseed oil and lampblack, the design provided superior protection against foul weather when fishing the North Atlantic. In fact, it is still preferred by many fishermen today.

The turned up front and long back keep water away from the face and neck without hindering visibility. Now made with a more modern coating, this Sou’Wester still gives the same traditional look, flexibility and rugged comfort demanded by those who challenge the elements.

A sou’wester is a traditional form of collapsible oilskin rain hat that is longer in the back than the front to protect the neck fully.[1] A gutter front brim is sometimes featured.

The name is thought to come from the southwesterly wind which brings warm air from the tropics to the British Isles, often bringing rain as it cools over the sea.
