The regular  fyke net is a passive fishing gear designed for fish capture and population assessment in shallow waters. Foldable and easy to deploy, it is widely used by both commercial fishermen and aquatic biologists.

Key Features

• Collapsible design: made of a central net and two side wings

  • 25 ft wings for models over 30’’

  • 10 ft wings for models 24’’ and smaller

  • 6 ft wings for 10’’ models

• High-quality materials: knotless nylon or polypropylene netting (mesh sizes from 1/16’’ x 1/16’’ to 2’’ x 2’’, depending on the target species).

• Durable hoops: aluminum or stainless steel, ranging from 10’’ to 60’’ in diameter.

• Adjustable configuration:

  • Spacing between hoops = hoop diameter (except 10’’ it’ 30”and 12’’, set at 16’’ for 4 rings).

  • Circular entry hoop with a 2’’ opening.

• Funnels (throats) from 2’’ to 4’’, depending on the species targeted.

Applications

• Commercial fishing: commonly used for eel (also known as bourne).

• Scientific research: widely used for small fish population assessment in rivers and shallow water habitats.

Deployment

• The fyke net is secured at both ends (Head and Entrance) with stakes driven into the bottom.

• Side wings are stretched and held down with lead-core ropes or stones.

• Floats along the top line keep the wings and optional guide net at the surface, directing fish towards the entrance.

• Fish moving with the current are naturally funneled into the net body.

⚠️ Setting a fyke net is a delicate operation that may require several people.
