FYKE NET WITH FRAME

The regular fyke net with frame is a passive fishing gear.

Folding fishing gear, consisting of a central seine net

and two 25-foot side wings attached to the fyke nets.

Sometimes a guide net is also used.

The front frame helps stabilize the gear.

The term “eel creel” or “minnow cage” is sometimes used, but refers

to a smaller gear and more often rigid

Manufacture:

The regular fyke net is made of knotless nylon or polypropylene netting from (1/16″ x 1/16″) to (2” x 2”)

depending on your needs for the target species. It is equipped with four hoops and a frame usually made of aluminum

or stainless steel frame ranging from 10″ to 60″ in diameter. Normally, the distance between the rings

is the same as their diameter, except for the 10″ and 12″ which are 18″ apart.

The wings are attached directly to the fyke nets. Funnel webs are 2″ to 4″ in diameter

depending on the species

Use:

Used for commercial eel fishing, also called bourne by fishermen

but most often used by scientists for

the assessment of small fish in shallow rivers.

The net is then secured at both ends (head and foot) by stakes driven into the ground,

with the wings stretched out on either side of the inlet and held to the bottom with

ballast (leaded headrope) or stones placed on the lower headrope.

The floats on the upper wingline and the guide net, if present, keep the boat on the surface

and follow the falling tide, guiding the fish towards the fyke net entrance.

Fish moving upstream are forced to follow the guide or the wing and enter through the fyke net body.

Fyke net installation is a delicate operation that can require the work of more than one person.
