CLEAT 6 INCHES SS, OPEN BASE
There are several types of cleats including :
the mooring cleat is generally used to block a hawser tied up elsewhere on land or on a pontoon. It is in the form of a very flattened and widened T. The rope is locked on the cleat with a cleat knot. It is done by making a dead turn, then a half figure eight ending with a half key usually reversed.
the cleat is used to block a halyard or a sheet. It consists of 2 jaws facing each other, pivoting on vertical axes, mounted on springs between which the rope to be blocked is passed. Of relatively recent invention (1930’s) it was created for small racing yachts by the famous German-American racer Manfred Curry and is called CurryKlemme in German.1 On inhabitable yachts whose settings are less frequently modified, there is a variant, with a conduit and a single notched cam (or an equivalent system of pinching the rope) called a lever blocker. They are used for maneuvers such as halyards, spinnaker pole, topping lift (for the spinnaker), or for sail reduction maneuvers (reefing lines).
For ergonomic reasons, they are often grouped within easy reach near the cockpit on a common plate (nicknamed “Piano”). Such an arrangement allows the use of a single winch (an expensive instrument) to serve several distinct maneuvers.2
the sheet cleat is an asymmetrical mooring cleat: it allows the sheet to be locked by a simple dead turn. One of the legs of the T is closer to the base, which allows the rope to be jammed naturally while leaving the possibility of quickly releasing the cleat if necessary.
The Clamcleat (literally Scallop cleat), (registered trademark), or Clam for short, is a V-shaped conduit whose sides have grooves similar to those of the above-mentioned shell 3, which wedge the rope under tension thanks to its own traction. Without any moving mechanical part, it is very simple and is used for small diameter ropes on light sailboats for common maneuvers.
The equivalent of the cleats on old rigs is the capillot.
