THE FISHERIES

The snow crab fishery in Eastern Canada began in 1960. At first as by-catch by groundfish dredgers near Gaspé, Quebec. Its development was slow until the 1980s. Then, with the help of snow crab traps, it expanded rapidly and became one of the largest fisheries in the country, in terms of quantity and value of landings. On the Scotian Shelf, the snow crab fishery has been in existence since the early 1970s, when it produced landings of about 1,000 t.

After reaching 1,500 t in 1979, these landings dropped considerably in the mid-1980s. A strong recruitment wave to the fishery was observed in 1986. Total landings reached unprecedented highs of about 10,000 t each year in the early 2000s. Females are not commercially valuable because of their smaller size. This helps to protect them from the dangers of human exploitation and to protect their reproductive capacity.
